Special Characters

My apologies if this is a duplicate post, however I searched and was unable to find anything that fit.

Our providers have been struggling with the whole “you can’t use special characters in ecw” nonsense.

We take O2 sats and have to write out the word “percent”

We can’t use < or > to indicate time spent in a visit or anything else.

We can’t use quotation marks to document the patient’s own words.

How are others handling this?  Do we know if there is a list of approved areas that special characters can be used without breaking something?

We have browse notes in many areas that were built back in 2005/2006 when we went live and they are full of special characters.  Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t.  I have been spending a little bit of free time every week browsing through various areas (labs, imaging, etc) trying to find locations that we have built things with special characters and clean them up, but after 12 years on the system, I could be doing that for the next 12 years.

We are not using 10e as of yet and are on SP2.5.2

Thanks Darice
