I have sent numerous emails and had several telephone calls with eCW regarding a serious patient safety issue that they are treating as an “enhancement” rather than taking the necessary corrective action or alerting the user base. This leaves me with no choice but to make this public so that current users are aware.
Currently, with role based permissions, if Joe Smith has a “billing” role that does not include access to clinical functions like lab results and Jane Smith has a “clinical” role that permits the review of lab results, BOTH names will still show up in the drop down list of the “assign to” box in the lab result module. Consequently, it would be very easy for someone relying on auto-fill, or even with an errant mouse click to accidentally assign a lab result, such as a pathology report positive for breast cancer to the wrong person, close out the result and think that it went to Jane Smith, when in fact it went to Joe Smith who will never see it.
This is a SERIOUS patient safety issue and security flaw that I think every user must be aware of, and demand that eCW give the highest priority in fixing. This is not an “enhancement” as my SAM keeps referring to it. Changing the number of characters permitted in a window or the color of a screen background is an enhancement. This is a patient safety issue of the highest order and urge anyone with a solution or access to people higher up in the chain of command at eCW address this immediately.
