In the hopes of finding a cause I have decided to create a post hoping to gather others experiences and steps taken in order to narrow our search for a fix.
Issue: Out of thousands of workstations mixed between Win 10 and Win 7 starting about 3 - 4 weeks ago we have noticed an increase in random users complaining about slowness and crashing. In one practice I had 6 Browser version running 50% hardwired 50% wireless and 2 Exe clients, the 2 Exe clients would slow to a crawl and in some cases crash but the browser version had no issues. We currently have 3 production databases 1 large greater than 400 concurrent users two smaller less than 100 concurrent users both running on ASP32 DC.
Network: I check speedtest, the latency is fine and in most examples there is no sign of bandwidth issues our max available bandwidth is most always within 20% of the results which should help to rule out priority and or large downloads.
Ping tests to the DC are constant at 17 - 25ms with only 1 or two remote time outs over hours of checks. (I know its not an idea test but it helps narrow the search)
Internal ping tests between workstations are also between 2 - 12 pending on site location with spikes only happening when the user moves to wireless connectivity which in general is also normal.
Ecw Debug logs within Ecw during some of the witnessed slowness show basically the same as the pings with the range latency between 17 - 50 with some spiking to 100ms but typically when refreshing the S-Jelly which is norm on workstations not impacted by the chronic performance issues.
IE trusted sites have been updated and verified by both our IS admin and Ecw, our antivirus software has all the correct exceptions and I see little activity such as real time scans and or full system scans happening at the same times as some of the complaints.
Task manager shows stable CPU usage, memory usage is high 70% but not maxed and disk usage is for the most part under 50% on average. Some examples may be a memory issue as Windows pushes more toward paging as memory usage goes up but I am not sure how to verify this, I could be completely wrong. I did test SSD’s which is what my workstation runs on but my workstation usage is huge although my Ecw clients only have problems when there is a DC issue reported? I read some other Forum posts in which people said SSD’s are overkill and wouldn’t cause that much of a performance improvement, which is probably true. Just curious what others have found,
My hunch is we have some type of issue with IE and or our workstations but I cant seem to put my finger on it. In most examples the logged in user does have admin access and I am not seeing any errors in the event log indicating security problems. When I see the Exe version crashing and on the second monitor click through no problem on the browser version it makes it very difficult to blame it on the Ecw data center or network. My hope is more users are finding instances similar to mine and either 1 found solutions or two we can unite to confirm there is a large problem that needs elevated attention from Ecw. We have slowness for other reasons for sure but what I described above is something new as of the last 3 - 4 weeks ish any ideas or confirmations would be much appreciated. Thanks everyone,
